The Links Shellharbour 15-9-24

Golf is meant to be fun…… isn’t it? Why do supposedly sane, well-adjusted people expose themselves to 5 hours of 80kph, bitterly cold winds and large, long reptiles that can take you out with one quick jab? Then you lose half a dozen balls and start questioning your already fragile opinion of your golf game after posting a score your old grandfather, whose been dead for 30 years, could beat.  And we pay $45 to do it!

37 members teed up at The Links, Shellharbour on September 15th in the first round of the BHSGC 2024/25 club championship. As implied above, conditions were, to say the least, testing. Only one member, Dave Murphy, managed to break handicap accumulating an excellent 37 points and shooting 77 off the stick. In 2nd place was Dean Watson with 34 points beating Lee Tsiamis on a countback.

2 players dropped out early in the round due to injury and a whopping 23 failed to get to 30 points and subsequently got a shot back on their handicap. The BBQ and presentation was a subdued affair but those in attendance enjoyed the usual sausage and steak sandwiches and of course a few bevvies to wash them down. And those who courageously tackled the Presidents chimichurri were handsomely rewarded…. again and again.

Round 7 is at Jamberoo GC on October 27, tee off 7.00am. However, our next event is Rd 1 of the 4Ball Match Play on October 6th. The draw has been conducted (from the hat) and has been distributed to participants.

Some of our members are advancing in years and have lived interesting, varied and fulfilling lives. Col Lawson is one such member. I asked him recently if he’s ever considered writing an autobiography. He replied “On what?”

See you at the next game or at the pub.
